Teacher Interview: Tsinghua University Chinese Foreign Language Teacher

Featuring our second interview, with guest Ms. Mimi Zuo, long-time Verbal Chinese Teacher at Tsinghua University's Chinese Language Program.

Ms. Mimi Zuo is (at the time of publishing this interview) my 401B Verbal Chinese Teacher. I have had a wonderful experience with her as my teacher and would highly recommend her to other fellow students. I feel that Ms. Zuo excels in helping students to relax, and feel at ease, so as to be more likely to speak up. She is able to ease students into class and peer discussions, as well as other interactive activities that help students open up to her and their classmates. If I may add just one personal comment regarding Ms. Zuo's class, would be "This is the funnest of all my classes, not to say anyone should take it because of fun, but it certainly IS fun".

我们的第二个访问介绍左莹老师。她是清华大学的汉语课程口语老师。

在 访问的时候，左老师是我的401B班的口语老师。我在左老师的课里有很好的经验也很愿意推荐这位老师给别的学生。我觉得左老师帮助同学们放轻松才可以放开 说汉语。她在课堂里让同学们参加课堂谈论和同学之间谈论，也有举办别的活动让同学们更加沟通合作。我想留一个私人的评说就是，“左老师的口语课是最好玩的 课，不是说单因为好玩就推荐，但是真的是很好玩。“

Do you like teaching Foreign Students? And why? I enjoy teaching Foreign Students because I feel that many of these students are generally more knowledgeable and concerned regarding society, world environment, global affairs, and the welfare of all living organisms compared to native Chinese students.

你喜欢教外国学生吗？为什么？我喜欢教外国学生因为我觉得他们对社会，世界，国际事件，和大小生命比中国学生有知识和关心。

How long have you been teaching Chinese Language students? 5-6 years

您教汉语学生有几年了？五六年了

Which subjects have you taught before? And which is your favorite? I have taught Comprehensive, Verbal, as well Chinese State of the Country courses. My favorite would be the Verbal Chinese Courses.

你教过哪些课程？哪些是你最喜爱的？我教过综合，口语，和中国国情。我最喜爱的是口语课。 

 What do you find your students having the most difficulty with while learning Chinese? Most of my students have the greatest difficulties with pronunciation.

你的学生们最有困难的地方在哪儿？他们最大的困难是发音。

Are there any personal experiences, academic background that has allowed you to teach Foreign Students so well? I believe that any sort of teaching needs about 40% knowledge, 30% experience, and 30% personality. In regards to teaching Foreign Students, international knowledge in this case would be needed. My personal experience has helped me in communicating with Foreign Students. I believe that a very colorful experience, some world knowledge, and also a bit of age helps. The age comes as a byproduct of the duration of my experiences.

您有没有一些私人经验或学术背景让你能够这么有效的教育外国留学生吗？我觉得教育需要40%知识，30%经验，和30%个性。关于教育外国留学生那也需要国际知识。我私人经验帮助了我与外国留学生的沟通。我相信需要有多彩多色的经验，一些国际知识，和年龄也有帮助。经验也是需要时间的，所以跟年龄也有关。

Do you think there is any difference teaching Foreign Students versus native students? Indeed, the difference is very big. Students attitudes differ in regards to studies and knowledge. Foreign Students seem to have a better grasp of what they want to learn whereas native students seem to learn solely for the purpose of practicality.

您觉得教育外国留学生根教育本地学生有差别吗？有很大的差别。学生们的学习态度和知识不同。外国留学生好像比较知道他们想学什么但本地学生的学习大部分只是为了工作而学的。

 What are some reasons that lead you to choose teaching in Beijing and/or Tsinghua University in particular? I have been born and raised in Beijing, and my family comes from a long line of Tsinghua University Professors. We have all been teachers, each generation.

有哪些理由让您在北京或清华大学哪？ 我是在北京清华大学校园出生和成长的。我的家庭成员都是清华大学的老师。我们每一代都是老师。

 Do you have any messages or advice to give to anyone that might read your interview? When I first left China for a foreign country, I wanted to tell everyone how good China was and clear up any misconceptions. But after living abroad and coming back, I realized I feel the same as foreigners do regarding many aspects of China. Now, I hope that China can be a land of warmth for all, but it will be a long journey.

您有没有一些话可以留给将来看到您的访问的观众？但我刚出国的时候，我很想跟大家说中国有多好，跟他们解释很多误会。但是在国外住了一段时间然后回国了，我发现我有许多关于中国的想法跟外国人一样。现在我希望中国能国成为一个对大家都温暖的国家，但是这条路很长。
